1. Reach out to Friends & Family
We all understand that this is a difficult time to be looking for a job. Many companies in the Philippines and around the world are suffering because of the pandemic and as a result, are letting employees go. So I think the best place to start is by letting your family and friends know that you are currently looking for a job. Tell them about the jobs you're looking for and the companies that you may be interested in. The world is a small place and they may know people that are hiring in the positions that you are interested in or may help you spread the word about your job search. As the age-old saying goes it is not what you know but who you know that counts. It always helps to know somebody through a personal connection when applying to jobs.
After reaching out to your family and friends, reach out to former colleagues and bosses. They may have openings in their companies and know your skills and work ethic. Even if they aren’t hiring, they can be references for your other applications.
2. Create a LinkedIn Account & update your Resume
LinkedIn is the social media platform for all work-related activities. It is a professional networking platform with over 600 million profiles where you can share your job experiences and skills while at the same time keep up to date with industry news.
Linkedin is also a great place to look for open positions and network with individuals at companies you may want to work for. Once you created a LinkedIn account you will have access to open positions all around the world and openly network with people that work at companies or industries you may be interested in.
When creating a LinkedIn profile make sure your resume is up to date because you will want to post your resume on your profile page for connections to see.
3. Use your time to learn new skills while you are unemployed
The most important thing to do during this period is to make sure your skills are up to date and are needed for the jobs that you are applying for. Employers like to see that you are actively trying to improve yourself and learn new things. Nobody is 100% ready for a new job, we all need to learn and adapt to a new position and that is why it is important for the employer to know that you are capable of learning something new.
There are plenty of free online courses where you can learn a new skill easily including Udemy, EdX classes, and free Microsoft training and tutorials. These learning sites offer both free and paid courses suitable for all skill levels.
